Rosemont’s Gigi Schiano Makes History with the Boston Hunters
Rosemont College is thrilled to celebrate a major milestone for one of our own. Student athlete Gisella “Gigi” Schiano made her official WPBL Debut on August 2nd, stepping onto the mound for the Boston Hunters against the San Francisco Firebells.
The formation of the Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL) is the latest milestone in the history of women’s professional baseball. For more than a century, women have formed teams, built leagues, and carved out space in a sport that often overlooked their talent. The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which operated from 1943 to 1954, remains the most iconic example, dissolving after postwar shifts in public interest. Professional play resurfaced briefly with the Colorado Silver Bullets in the mid‑1990s, but that team disbanded after four seasons. With the launch of the WPBL, professional women’s baseball has finally returned, marking not only a new beginning, but a powerful continuation of the legacy built by generations of athletes who refused to step off the field.
A Historic Moment on the Mound
In her WPBL debut, Gigi showed composure and skill under the bright lights of professional competition. Entering the game in the seventh inning, she shut down the Firebells’ offense and recorded a strikeout for a scoreless inning. She followed up her first performance by starting game 4 against the New York Heights, pitching 3.1 innings and holding the second place Heights to only 3 runs while on the mound.
In her most recent outing, Gigi pitched 3 shutout innings to close out the Hunters’ 6-1 win over the New York Heights. Together, these performances mark the beginning of a promising WPBL career for a pitcher who keeps elevating her game.
From Rosemont Baseball Pioneer to Pro Athlete
Gigi already made history by becoming the first woman to join Rosemont College’s baseball team during the ’25-’26 season. Her presence on the Ravens’ roster was groundbreaking, and her dedication, work ethic, and talent quickly earned the respect of teammates, coaches, and fans. Throughout the season, Gigi made 17 pitching appearances (tied for most on the team), struck out 8 batters and gave up 1 run or less in 9 of her 17 outings.
In August of 2025, Gigi journeyed to Washington D.C. to participate in tryouts for the WPBL spanning across 4 days. More than 600 women from 10 countries came to play, competing for 100 spots in the league’s draft pool. During the draft in October, Gigi was selected by Boston as the 4th pick in the 3rd round, earning a coveted spot as just 1 of 15 women who make up the team.
