Rosemont College is thrilled to announce that Kim Ward, President Pro Tempore of the Pennsylvania State Senate, will serve as the 2026 Commencement speaker. A trailblazing leader and dedicated public servant, Senator Ward will address the Class of 2026 on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 10:00am during our Commencement Ceremony.
Ward’s Historic Journey in Pennsylvania Politics
Since 2008, Kim Ward has proudly represented Pennsylvania’s 39th Senatorial District. She made history as the first woman to represent Westmoreland County in Harrisburg. In 2020, she became the first female Senate Majority Leader. Also, in 2022 and again in 2024, she was elected as the first woman to serve as Senate President Pro Tempore. These milestones reflect not only her leadership but also the respect she has earned from colleagues on both sides of the aisle.
At the heart of every decision Kim Ward makes is a simple question: What is best for Pennsylvanians and our Commonwealth? Her leadership ensures the people’s voice is never lost in government.
Kim Ward’s Key Achievements & Lasting Impact
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kim Ward championed a groundbreaking constitutional amendment, the largest transfer of executive power since President Hoover. This change gave Pennsylvania citizens a greater say in how government operated during crises. This included decisions about shutting down schools and businesses.
She also advanced critical regulatory reforms, including hospital funding legislation that made certain healthcare and business waivers permanent. Under her guidance, the state strengthened its fiscal solvency while protecting families.
A fierce champion for children and working families, Ward led efforts to reform Pennsylvania’s child abuse laws. Her Ready to Succeed legislation created one of the most successful higher education grant programs in the state. This program assists middle class families in affording college and building brighter futures.
From Respiratory Therapist to Senate President Pro Tempore
Before entering politics, Kim Ward worked as a Board Certified Respiratory Therapist. She served at Allegheny General Hospital, Vanderbilt University Hospital, and Hershey Medical Center.
Outside the Capitol, Senator Kim Ward is a proud member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Hempfield Township. She and her husband, Dr. Thomas Ward, are the proud parents of three sons: Tom, Michael, and Matthew. They also have eight beautiful “grand angels”: Josie Jane, Thomas, George, Roman, Kennedy, Beau, Noah, and Jacob.
