Rosemont College is excited to share the newest issue of the Counseling Center series "A Place to Be Seen, Heard, and Supported." This weekly reflection highlights the importance of student wellbeing and personal growth. The latest message focuses on the idea of self care and reminds us that taking care of yourself does not have to follow a perfect or trending formula.
Counseling intern Sam Keller leads this thoughtful initiative for the Rosemont community. Through weekly reflections, Sam offers practical insights that help students navigate the challenges of college life. These messages encourage students to pause, reflect, and care for their mental health in ways that feel authentic and sustainable.
When you hear the words “self care,” what comes to mind?
A 5 a.m. morning routine? Journaling? Meditation? A 10 step skincare routine? Going to the gym? Drinking a green juice while somehow having your entire life together?
The internet has created a pretty specific picture of what taking care of yourself is supposed to look like.
But here's the thing:
Your version of self care doesn't have to look like anyone else's version of self care.
What helps your roommate recharge might exhaust you. What brings your friend joy might not be your thing at all. And just because something is trending as “self care” doesn't mean you have to add it to your routine.
Self care is really about learning what helps YOU feel more grounded, rested, connected, energized, or simply more like yourself.
Maybe that's going to the gym. Maybe it's taking a nap.
Maybe it's spending the night laughing with your friends. Maybe it's saying no to plans and having the night completely to yourself.
Maybe it's calling home, going for a drive, playing a video game, listening to music, cooking, going outside, watching your comfort show, cleaning your room, going to therapy, setting a boundary, or getting yourself your favorite coffee before class.
If it genuinely supports you, it counts.
The Counseling Center is always here as a space to talk things through and get support in all areas of life.
