With weather dancing on the Montgomery County doorstep and the format of the men’s golf championship altered because of the threat of heavy thunderstorms, it could have altered the expected results for the Rosemont men’s golf team.
Instead, it just seemed to reinforce the fact that the Ravens are just 18 holes away from a second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Rosemont enters the final day of the Colonial States Athletic Conference championship at the Indian Valley Country Club in complete control, holding a 36 shot lead over the second place squad from Cairn University for the automatic berth in the NCAA’s- which will take place at the Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky. from May 14-17.
The Ravens shot a combined 31-over par in the first round, which was broken up into two nine-hole sessions because of the threat of weather and the forecasted downpours. (Having the nine hole sessions allowed the CSAC to use only nine holes from today’s round in case weather did not allow for a full 18 holes for all teams to be completed.)
On the individual side, the Ravens had the only two scores that were shot under 80 on the day on the challenging Indian Valley track. Stephen Vye has the lead after shooting a 76 on the day- three shots better than teammate Michael Lange, who finished with a 79. Jordan Cook finished with an 80 to tie for third with Centenary’s Jerome Beyer.
Paul Fedele (86) and Hunter Mickatavage (87) were also in the Top 10 for the Ravens, who will play the second round on Saturday at Indian Valley in much kinder conditions. A shotgun start will get the play underway at 1 p.m.
