Rosemont College’s Writer’s Studio Workshops and Masterclasses will launch an exciting new course this fall titled Voice Into Meaning: Writing the Personal Essay. Led by instructor Chris Eckman, this six week workshop runs on Mondays from 6:00 – 8:00pm, beginning September 22 and ending October 27, 2025. The course will take place live on Zoom, making it accessible to writers both locally and beyond.
Explore the Art of the Personal Essay
An impactful personal essay does more than tell a story. It uncovers insight and reveals a new way of seeing. In this course, students will learn how to shape memory into meaning through voice, structure, and intention.
Each week, participants will explore how form supports content and how voice shapes the reader’s understanding. In addition, students will engage in guided readings, thoughtful discussions, and creative writing prompts. These activities are designed to spark ideas and encourage experimentation.
Your Experience is Enough
Writers often assume they need dramatic events to craft a compelling personal essay. However, this course takes a different approach. Chris Eckman encourages students to find power in everyday experiences. Your voice, your perspective, and your way of noticing the world are more than enough.
By the end of the workshop, each participant will have written and revised a personal essay in the form that best fits their story. Students will also receive feedback, build confidence, and leave with tools for future projects.
A Supportive & Focused Learning Environment
As part of Rosemont College’s noncredit Writer’s Studio, this workshop provides high quality instruction at an affordable cost. Although it is not for credit, the course is affiliated with Rosemont’s Creative Writing MFA Program and is open to graduate students, alumni, and the greater Philadelphia writing community.
Each class is limited to 12 students, ensuring an engaging and personalized experience. Because of this structure, students receive direct support from the instructor and meaningful feedback from peers.
