Rosemont College invites the campus community and alumni to gather in Main Building for hot cocoa at 5:45pm. The gathering is immediately followed by the 2025 Penny Toss on Monday, December 8, at 6:00pm. This cherished event remains one of the most anticipated celebrations of the season. It offers students and guests a joyful moment of connection during a busy time of year.
A Celebration With Deep Roots
Following hot cocoa in Main Building at 5:45pm, the main event begins at 6:00pm. Students and alumni will go outside to the porch of Main Building. President Jim Cawley, Deans Jay Kolik and Paulette Hutchinson, and the Student Government Association President, Lucy Madron, will then toss pennies to the students. The gesture demonstrates tradition as well as good wishes and fortune for the students in their upcoming final exams. Together all will join in singing carols, enjoy the tree lighting that create a warm and festive atmosphere.
The Penny Toss reflects a tradition that began with the Society of the Holy Child Jesus at the first Holy Child School in England. The Sisters encouraged students with small gifts during Christmastime. Rosemont continues this meaningful custom as a sign of inspiration and community spirit. Students collect pennies while singing together, and the moment brings a sense of joy and excitement to everyone present.
A Tradition That Strengthens Community
The 2025 Penny Toss offers students a welcome opportunity to pause and enjoy a shared experience. The event promotes fellowship and highlights values that shape the Rosemont mission. These values include justice, compassion, and trust in and reverence for the dignity of each person. Many students look forward to this celebration each year because it creates a sense of belonging.
The Penny Toss reflects the energy, tradition, and spirit that support student success. It also demonstrates the strong relationships that form across campus and continue long after graduation through the alumni community
