Trailblazing Congresswoman Who Changed Education Forever
At Rosemont College, Campus Ministry is proud to celebrate Women’s History Month by shining a spotlight on extraordinary women who have shaped our world. Each week, you’ll find inspiring images and stories displayed on the TV screen in the lobby of the Sharon Latchaw Hirsh Community Center — right where our campus community gathers every day.
Trailblazing Champion For Justice
This week, we proudly honor Patsy Takemoto Mink (1927–2002). Born in Paia, Hawaii, Patsy Mink was a trailblazing attorney, politician, and relentless champion for justice. In 1964, she made history as the first Asian American woman (and the first woman of color) elected to the United States Congress. She represented Hawaii for a total of 24 years, first in the at large district and later in the Second Congressional District.
But Patsy Mink’s legacy goes far beyond “firsts.” She was a fierce advocate for civil rights, women’s rights, affordable childcare, and bilingual education. Her most enduring gift to every American? Title IX.
Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act
As a principal author of the landmark legislation passed in 1972 (later renamed the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act in her honor), she ensured these powerful words became law:
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”
Thanks to Patsy Mink, millions of girls and women gained equal access to sports, scholarships, STEM programs, and safe learning environments. Title IX didn’t just open doors — it transformed lives, campuses, and entire generations.
Tribute at Rosemont College
At Rosemont College, where education and equity are at the heart of everything we do, her story resonates deeply. She proved that one determined voice in Congress can create opportunity for countless others. Stop by the Sharon Latchaw Hirsh Community Center lobby this week to see Patsy Mink’s photo and learn more about her journey. Let her story remind you that courage, persistence, and a commitment to justice can change the course of history. Stay tuned for next week’s honoree in our Women’s History Month series.

Women's Baseball History in the Making at Rosemont
Rosemont is helping to write a new chapter for women in baseball thanks to freshman Gisella "Gigi" Schiano who is the first woman ever to play on the Men's Baseball team at Rosemont (the team just secured the first win of their final NCAA III season yesterday, March 1, 2026), and who has already been drafted into the Women's Pro Baseball League -- the first professional women's baseball league to exist in 70 years!
