ROSEMONT – There was the balloon arch and the music tribute. Most importantly for the Rosemont sports community, there was something to really celebrate.
The Ravens outstanding 2018-19 season- one that has seen three teams make the NCAA Tournament- was celebrated at Cardinal Hall on Sunday with an overflow house of athletes, parents and coaches looking back at how remarkable a year this had been. The ceremony- which was emceed by former Comcast SportsNet anchor Leslie Gudel- proved to be a celebration of the year and the spirit that flows through college athletics.
The five big awards on the day reflected that diversity and the energy that has pulsed through the program. Nathan Moore was the first recipient of the Rookie of the Year award. The freshman golfer from Bristol, England has been a key part of the Ravens run to a second straight Colonial States Athletic Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament in suburban Lexington, Ky. in a little over two weeks.
The Cathy Mulvaney Award for spirit and commitment to the athletic program went to Nick Gianguillio from the men’s lacrosse program. The senior has wrestled with medical difficulties this year within his family, but was still a big part of the Ravens improvement and contention within the CSAC men’s lacrosse race until the final game of the regular season.
Darby O’Rourke was the winner of the Ann S. Donaldson Award which honors the ultimate definition of student athlete. The senior from the women’s soccer program has been a mainstay both on the field, in the classroom and also within the school community with her service on the Rosemont Student Athlete Advisory Committee .
The Male Athlete of the Year was golfer Michael Lange, who took home that award for the second time in a row. Lange was the medalist on Saturday as the Ravens rolled to the CSAC title on Saturday at Indian Valley for his fourth individual championship.
On the women’s side, Ashley Murray was the Female Athlete of the Year. The senior center was dominant this year for a team that controlled the CSAC from start to finish. Murray was the CSAC Player of the Year and was named to the All-Region team at the conclusion of the Ravens’ run to the NCAA Tournament.
