Exploring the Art of Memoir
Memoir as Literary Nonfiction focuses on shaping lived experience with intention. Memoir requires more than remembering events. Instead, writers must choose structure, voice, and detail with care. Therefore, this masterclass centers on craft and reflection.
Participants will read and discuss selected memoir texts. These readings demonstrate how writers transform memory into art. As a result, discussions will examine what separates memoir from fiction or journalism.
Writing & Guided Feedback
During the session, writers will create a short memoir vignette. Each piece will reflect a stylistic or structural element from the readings. Then, participants will share their work for peer and instructor feedback. This process supports revision and creative growth.
In addition, the course explores devices that elevate memoir into literary nonfiction. These include scene building, reflection, and narrative tension. Writers will also consider how memory shapes truth on the page.
The class encourages thoughtful inquiry. What is memory? What is truth? Can a story ever be fully accurate? Is absolute truth required in memoir? These questions guide meaningful discussion and writing.
