On Friday, September 11, 2026, Rosemont College students took part in a meaningful High Impact Friday experience at McKaig Nature Center in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Coordinated by Professor John Henderson, the half day program combined remembrance, service, and outdoor learning as participants commemorated the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, at the Living 9/11 Memorial.
The visit offered a powerful example of how reflection and education can take root in a natural setting.
Learning Through Nature & Remembrance
The experience at McKaig Nature Center was intentionally designed as a small group, community connected learning opportunity rather than a traditional classroom program. Students began with a guided tour led by Park Ranger Vytas Masalaitis, gaining orientation to the wooded park and its living memorial space.
From there, participants visited the Living 9/11 Memorial section of the park and engaged in hands on environmental stewardship and memorial beautification activities, including tree planting and ornamental landscaping. Working outdoors allowed students to contribute something lasting while reflecting on civic responsibility, service, and historical memory.
Holding this High Impact Friday at McKaig Nature Center created a distinctive learning environment. The quiet, wooded surroundings supported thoughtful discussion and remembrance in a way that a conventional classroom cannot fully replicate.
Moreover, students experienced firsthand how nature can serve as both a place of healing and a living classroom; one where collaboration, leadership, and care for community take practical form.
Rosemont College High Impact Fridays
Rosemont College launched "High Impact Fridays" in Fall of 2026. It is a voluntary initiative offering diverse experiential learning opportunities outside the traditional classroom. Each week features unique activities designed to foster personal growth, career development, and community connection. Ultimately, the program enriches the Student Life experience by connecting academic concepts with real-world practice and preparing graduates for leadership and rewarding careers. Examples include the American Revolution Museum, the Doylestown Cultural District and the 9/11 Memorial at the McKaig Nature Center.
