Rosemont College proudly celebrates Dr. Christine Hagedorn’s recent week long visit to McDaniel College Budapest. As a guest lecturer, she delivered an inspiring session on the international monetary system and sustainable business practices. Her work directly supported Dr. Lori Hockley’s international management course and brought real world global perspectives to the classroom.
A Full Circle Moment 40 Years in the Making
This trip marked Dr. Hagedorn’s first return to Budapest since her own junior year semester abroad in 1986. She described the experience as profoundly moving:
“My recent week long visit to McDaniel College Budapest provided an opportunity to engage students in applied international business, focusing on the international monetary system and aligning business strategy with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. These topics complemented my colleague Dr. Lori Hockley’s international management course. I am grateful to Dr. Hockley for the guest lecture invitation and to the students and staff for their warm welcome.
Returning as a professor to the place where I had studied 40 years ago was a profound experience and I guess you could call it a full circle moment in my career. I had the opportunity to work with an outstanding group of students.”
Interactive Lessons That Link Business to Real Impact
Through hands on exercises, students explored how multinational companies prioritize stakeholders and connect daily operations to sustainability outcomes. Furthermore, Dr. Hagedorn’s personal mission shines through in every class she teaches:
“It is a personal mission of mine to infuse sustainability into business education, and it was exciting to have an opportunity to do this in another country. I love the idea of these elements being part of the curriculum of an international management course or of any management course. I love the idea of providing opportunity for future managers to consider the triple bottom line: people, planet and profit, when making business decisions. That was part of the goal Dr. Hockley and I had with these guest lectures.”
Research Breakthroughs & Unexpected Discoveries
Beyond the classroom, Dr. Hagedorn advanced her ongoing research on repurposed historic bank buildings by studying two landmark sites in Budapest. A serendipitous find added even more depth to her work: a fascinating history of coffee exhibit at the Budapest Electrotechnical Museum. She spent three hours immersed in the displays and brought fresh insights back to Rosemont, now using the global coffee trade as a powerful lens for teaching international business.
Why This Matters for Rosemont Students
Lastly, experiences like Dr. Hagedorn’s demonstrate Rosemont’s deep commitment to global citizenship and forward thinking education. When faculty model international engagement and sustainability, students gain the confidence and skills to become responsible leaders.
