The 2026 Patrick Herman Memorial Garden Opening brought the entire Rosemont community together in a beautiful celebration of remembrance, unity, and sustainability. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the Herman family gathered in strong numbers to officially open the Patrick Herman Memorial Garden.
The heartfelt ceremony reflected Patrick’s legacy and deep impact on campus life and his passion for gardening, community service, and caring for the Earth.
A Symbolic Start to the Memorial Opening
The Patrick Herman Memorial Garden Opening began at the community center mailroom, where attendees assembled for the traditional “walking of the bike” to the garden. This meaningful procession honored Patrick’s spirit and his strong connection to the Rosemont community. Patrick’s nephew, Dylan, led the walk with visible joy, setting a warm and hopeful tone that carried throughout the morning.
Sacred Moments at the Garden
Once at the garden, Sister Peg opened the ceremony with a heartfelt prayer that invited gratitude, remembrance, and care for the Earth. Participants then took part in a moving blessing of the garden, each person spraying holy water over the soil in a shared act of blessing and reflection. The gesture created a powerful sense of togetherness and purpose.
Madison Lauffer, Director of Student Engagement, followed with a moving reading of “Love Letter from the Afterlife” by Andrea Gibson. The piece resonated deeply with everyone present, offering comfort and sparking quiet moments of personal reflection.
Voices of Gratitude During the Opening
Before the ceremony concluded, attendees were invited to share remarks. Patrick’s father, Pat Herman, spoke with sincerity and warmth. He thanked the Rosemont community for honoring his son’s memory and expressed deep appreciation for the continued support shown to the Herman family. His words strengthened the emotional bond felt by all.
The Patrick Herman Memorial Garden Opening ended on a thoughtful note: each attendee received seeds, a planting pot, and a copy of the reading. These gifts symbolize growth, remembrance, and the ongoing connection between Patrick’s legacy and the Rosemont community. We all look forward to all of the vegetables that will grow through the summer in the garden.
