Rosemont College proudly invites all students and the community to a unique biodiversity event at Stoneleigh, scheduled for Saturday, September 6, 11:00am to 2:00pm. Organized by Professors Christine Hagedorn and Joanne Campbell, this free event is offered in conjunction with the college’s interdisciplinary course, Healing Earth: Theory and Practice.
Explore the Ecosystem Firsthand
Stoneleigh is undergoing an exciting transformation. Efforts to create a beautiful and biodiverse garden are showing results. New species, never previously seen on the property, continue to appear. This event gives participants the opportunity to observe and identify organisms that now call the garden home.
Guided walks will highlight a wide variety of life forms, including birds, reptiles, invertebrates, fungi, and mammals. Participants will also contribute to community science by recording their observations. In addition, the event offers a chance to enjoy time outdoors while supporting meaningful ecological research.
Connecting the Event to the Healing Earth Course
This experience directly supports the goals of Rosemont’s Healing Earth: Theory and Practice course. Developed by Professors Hagedorn, Campbell, and Biology professor Dr. Jeanette Dumas, the course blends ethics, science, and social action. It is part of the college’s sustainability curriculum and is inspired by Laudato si and the Healing Earth textbook from the International Jesuit Ecology Project.
Healing Earth challenges students to explore the links between environmental, social, and economic justice. Through outdoor learning, students observe ecosystems, analyze environmental challenges, and propose real solutions.
Learning by Doing
Importantly, this course goes beyond lectures. Students collaborate on projects that combine scientific understanding, ethical reflection, and mindfulness. These projects develop leadership and encourage a deeper sense of environmental responsibility.
Events like the one at Stoneleigh reinforce classroom learning with direct experience. They allow students to connect theory to action in ways that are impactful and lasting.
