Rosemont College is excited to launch a new noncredit course through The Rosemont College Writer’s Studio: Between Gutters and Panels: Learning How To Write Comics. This dynamic online class runs from September 25 through October 30, 2025, meeting Thursdays from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Zoom.
Instructors Nicole Markert and Ruby Baker will guide students through the fundamentals of writing comics. Whether you are a new or experienced writer, this course provides the tools to tell stories through both words and images.
Why Study Comics?
Comics are often misunderstood, but they combine strong storytelling with visual art in ways that connect deeply with readers. Unlike traditional prose, comics allow writers to use space, structure, and images to enhance meaning.
In this course, students will explore foundational concepts from Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud. This essential text helps explain how comics work as a storytelling medium. Additionally, the course will highlight the work of several contemporary creators to show how the genre has evolved.
What You Will Create
By the end of the course, you will write and develop your own short comic or script. The focus will be on story structure, character development, pacing, and panel layout. You do not need to be an artist to succeed in this course. In fact, many students choose to collaborate with illustrators or focus on writing scripts.
Furthermore, the course welcomes all genres. Whether you prefer fantasy, memoir, nonfiction, or something else, you will find support and flexibility here.
A Unique Opportunity from Rosemont
This course is offered through The Rosemont College Writer’s Studio, which provides noncredit writing classes for adult learners and emerging writers. The Studio is affiliated with Rosemont College’s MFA in Creative Writing, giving students access to a broader literary community.
As a result, participants will not only improve their craft but also connect with peers who share their passion for comics and storytelling.
