Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy Requirements
The Undergraduate College: Traditional, On Campus
The Undergraduate College Philosophy program offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree that requires 120 credits (40 courses) including:
Major Courses: 33 credits (11 courses).
Recommended Supporting Courses: 0-6 credits (0-2 courses).
Elective Courses: 36-42 credits (12-14 courses). The remaining credit hours are electives and can consist of Philosophy courses, but should not be limited to that particular discipline. BA Philosophy students can earn any minor (except Mathematics and Philosophy) faster due to overlapping course requirements. For example, the minor in Ethics and Leadership and the minor in Sociology could be combined to satisfy the Philosophy Elective requirements. See Minors for details and discuss with your advisor.
Core Curriculum Experience Course: 0-3 credits (1 course). There is no practicum/internship requirement for the BA Philosophy but is offered under the Major Elective Courses. This Core Curriculum course requirement is offered within a student’s major.
Core Curriculum Senior Capstone: 3 credits (1 course). This Core Curriculum course requirement is offered within a student’s major.
Core Curriculum Courses: 42 credits (14 courses). Students will be able to count three (3) classes in their major toward Core Curriculum.
Philosophy Major Core Courses (33 Credits)
PHI 0100: Questions That Matter: An Introduction to Philosophy
Prerequisite: None
An introduction to the methods and problems of philosophy and to important figures in the history of philosophy. Topics include the nature of knowledge and reality, free will and determinism, the mind/body problem, the existence of God, and the meaning of life. Readings from classical and contemporary sources.
Offered fall/spring every year. (3 Credits)
PHI 0200: History of Western Philosophy: Ancient and Medieval
A survey course in the history of western philosophy intended to introduce students to the theories of prominent ancient and medieval philosophers. Concentration on works by the Pre-Socratics, Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, St. Augustine, St. Thomas 269 Aquinas, and others.
Offered fall semester in alternate years. (3 Credits)
PHI 0201: History of Western Philosophy: Early Modern Thought
Prerequisite: None
Examines the development of modern western philosophy with special emphasis on Continental Rationalism and British Empiricism. Concentration on works by Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, and their influence on Kant. Offered spring semester in alternate years.

PHI 0230: Logic: The Art of Reasoning
Prerequisite: None
An introduction to the basic concepts, principles, and methods of argument analysis and evaluation, including deductive vs. inductive reasoning, validity, soundness, truth tables, deductive proof, and probability and statistical reasoning. May also include Aristotelian logic, informal fallacies, and causal reasoning and scientific method. Helpful for students preparing for GREs or LSATs.

PHI 0360: Ethical Theory
Prerequisite: None
An evaluation and analysis of major ethical theories in the western tradition including virtue-oriented ethics, natural law, deontology, utilitarianism, and theories of justice and rights. Concentrated study of works of major historical and contemporary thinkers.Â

PHI 0420: Senior Seminar
A seminar in special areas, designed according to the needs of majors.

HIS 0250: Emergence of Modern Europe*
Prerequisite: None
A political, cultural, and intellectual history of Europe from 1500 to 1815. Topics covered include the Reformation, scientific and technological change, the rise of international politics, and the French Revolution.

RST 0124: World Religions*
Prerequisite: None
A survey of the major world religions, primarily Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The course will cover the origins, development, major religious beliefs and practices, and the contemporary status of each of these religions. Students will also reflect about the encounters between these religions, especially the prospect for inter religious dialogue.
