Minor: Africana and Black Studies
Africana & Black Studies Minor
The Undergraduate College: Traditional, On Campus
The interdisciplinary minor in Africana and Black Studies offers students the opportunity to examine the histories, cultures, societies, literatures, and arts of people of African descent, as well as the contributions of the black community to world civilization. Discussions on race, justice, equality, gender, and class are integral to understanding American and global history through a detailed study of black identity constructions and the liberation struggles led by individuals of African and Caribbean descent. The curriculum takes a transnational approach to studying the Black experience, placing it in a comparative context with Africa and the African Diaspora. Students can tailor their personalized education by selecting from a range of core and elective courses, allowing them to focus on areas of interest. This program lays a strong foundation for intellectual and practical application, social justice, engagement, and a deep examination of race, geography, and power dimensions.
