Rosemont College and Assistant Professor Anthony Johnson are pleased to announce a special cultural event that highlights student creativity and scholarly engagement. On Monday, December 8 at 2:00pm, students in the Introduction to Africana Studies course will present an original African Spiritual Song in the Community Center, Room 208. This performance serves as their final project before exams begin during the week of December 8 and offers an engaging opportunity to experience the work they developed throughout the semester.
A Creative Interpretation of Historical Traditions
The project centers on the history and meaning of enslaved African spirituals. These songs offered enslaved people a way to express sorrow and hope during difficult times. They also helped build community and encouraged emotional strength. In many cases, spirituals included coded messages that supported communication and resistance.
Students explored this history in class and learned how these songs blended faith, storytelling, and the longing for freedom. Their research guided the creation of an original spiritual. They wrote the lyrics, arranged the music, and produced the final composition. This work reflects their dedication and their respect for the tradition that inspired them.
