Rosemont College proudly announces that graphic arts student Phoenix Gruver earned second place in the America 250PA Direct Effect Innovation Challenge. This statewide competition took place in Harrisburg and invited students to create fresh marketing strategies inspired by the theme Miles of Impact. The challenge celebrated the Pennsylvania Turnpike and its long history.
A Strong Showing at the State Capitol
This year, Rosemont stood out among many participating colleges. The college advanced to the final and third round as one of only five invited institutions. Phoenix reached the finals on his own, which made his accomplishment even more impressive. In earlier years, groups of students represented Rosemont. Phoenix moved through every stage without a team. His success marked the first time the college earned a top placement in the event.
His progress also demonstrated the strength of independent thinking at Rosemont. It showed how quickly students grow when supported by dedicated faculty mentors. Professor Christine Hagedorn recruited Phoenix to participate and served as his advisor.
An Innovative Marketing Proposal
Phoenix created a clear proposal centered on a mobile app for travelers across Pennsylvania. His idea also introduced the Eighty Fifth Anniversary Turnpike Coin Series. Each service plaza along the five hundred sixty five mile route would feature a unique collectible coin that highlights local culture. The series encouraged travelers to explore communities across the state.
Phoenix also presented target audiences, a one hundred thousand dollar budget, and a detailed rollout plan. These elements strengthened his final presentation and showed his ability to combine creativity with practical planning.
Celebrating a Community Effort
Professor Christine Hagedorn praised Phoenix for his dedication: “This was our seventh consecutive year participating in this challenge and the fourth time we made it to the final five. This is the first time we placed within the top three. I have so much praise for Phoenix’s work ethic, attention to detail, creativity, responsibility and follow through. From the moment I first mentioned the idea of this challenge, Phoenix was all in and he took the ball and ran with it. He developed and created this entire challenge all on his own, which was extremely impressive. Rosemont College is so proud of Phoenix and how he respresented us.”
Phoenix traveled to the State Capitol and was joined by a Rosemont team, present to support his efforts, that included Rosemont College President Jim Cawley, Professor Hagedorn, Suzanne Cawley, and fellow student Jana Ehnot. The group also met with Andre Victor Castillo, an America 250PA employee and Rosemont graduate who once competed in the same challenge. Andre now works for the America250PA organization across the Commonwealth and welcomed the Rosemont team during their visit.
President Jim Cawley reflected on Phoenix’s achievement, saying, “Phoenix’s work represents the very best of Rosemont College with creativity, grit, and a deep commitment to excellence. He stepped into a statewide competition on his own and rose to the top through talent, attention to detail and determination. Our entire Rosemont community is extraordinarily proud of him, not only for what he accomplished, but for the heart and hard work he put into representing our college with such distinction.”
A Moment of Pride for Rosemont College
Phoenix Gruver’s success shows the creativity, determination, and leadership found in the Rosemont College student community. His achievement also highlights the impact of the graphic arts program and its commitment to preparing students for meaningful professional experiences.
