Rosemont College proudly announces the publication of 1947 Making the World Over, a major new work by Professor Emeritus of History, Richard Leiby. It is available for purchase from publisher McFarland—a leading independent publisher of academic and general interest nonfiction books. The book represents more than fifteen years of dedicated research in prominent archives across the United States and the United Kingdom. Dr. Leiby conducted research in the Truman Presidential Library, the Hoover Presidential Library, the National Archives, and several university collections. Some of his travel to archival sites was supported by Connelly grants that he received while serving as a member of the Rosemont faculty.
The Year That Reshaped the Modern World
In this book, Dr. Leiby examines the global shifts that followed the end of World War II. Each chapter focuses on a significant event from 1947 that helped move the world from wartime recovery to a more modern era. He explores topics such as the rehabilitation of Germany, the transformation of race relations in United States sports, the evolution of popular music, and the rise of television as a cultural force.
Dr. Leiby explains that although the war ended in 1945, its effects continued to influence daily life for millions. Many nations faced shortages in food, energy, and industrial goods. Europe in particular struggled to rebuild economies that stood near collapse. According to Dr. Leiby, the choices made in 1947 helped stabilize global conditions and set the course for a more secure future.
A Broad and Engaging Historical Study
The book offers a wide exploration of United States politics, international relations, music, sports, and early television technology. Dr. Leiby highlights stories of people who are often left out of traditional historical accounts. He combines interviews, archival materials, and secondary research to reveal why 1947 marked a turning point in the creation of the contemporary world.
A Significant Scholarly Achievement
Rosemont College celebrates this achievement and recognizes the dedication that brought this project to completion. The book is now available for purchase, and the college congratulates Dr. Leiby on this meaningful milestone. Rosemont College also thanks Dr. Leiby for all of his contributions to our community.
